Heritage, Rewritten

How to Respect Architecture While Designing for Modern Life

By Lynn Madyson, Principal Interior Designer

I’ve always believed the most beautiful homes are the ones that honor their past while embracing the present. When we work on historic home renovation projects at Lynn Madyson Interiors, the goal is never to erase—but to evolve. The art lies in honoring a home’s architectural soul while quietly enhancing it to support the way we live today.  My time spent living in Paris, surrounded by dreamy architecture with the juxtaposition of modern living in 16th-century Haussmann apartment buildings insights a rush of excitement and thrill in my body.  I return to Paris often and enjoy traveling and exploring the world.  It feeds my inspiration, art, culture and food all inform my soul in the design process.

Preserving Character, Elevating Function

There’s something special about walking into a home with history—you can feel it in the creak of the floorboards, the shape of a doorway, the weight of a well-built window. Our mission is to protect those stories while gently introducing more comfort, flow, and functionality.

Whether it’s reimagining a primary suite in a 1920s Annapolis home or refreshing a much-loved family kitchen, every change we make is rooted in respect—and designed to feel like it’s always been there.

Designing for the Way You Live Today

Of course, as much as we love patina and provenance, modern life needs a bit more. We think about:

  • Better storage
  • More natural light
  • Integrated technology that disappears
  • Updated kitchens and baths that serve today’s routines—but still nod to the past

It’s a balance—and one we love getting just right.

An Annapolis Classic, Reimagined

One recent project involved updating two vintage bathrooms in a 1920s home. We kept the charm—classic tile, warm wood vanities, period-inspired hardware—but reworked the layouts and lighting for daily comfort, in true quiet luxury interiors style. The result? A space that feels timeless, luxurious, and deeply rooted in the home’s history—a hallmark of our approach to timeless home renovations.

Why It Matters?

When we preserve a home’s character with integrity, the result is more than beautiful—it’s meaningful. It becomes a space that carries stories forward, with room for new memories to unfold. At Lynn Madyson Interiors, we don’t just renovate—we honor and evolve. We design for where your home has been, and where it’s meant to go—blending old and new interior design with grace and intention.
