Designing for the Five Senses

The Science of Neuroaesthetics at Home

Beauty isn’t just seen—it’s felt.
That feeling of “flow” ..of welcoming…of calm and peacefulness.

At Lynn Madyson Interiors, we believe that truly elevated design goes beyond visual appeal to create homes that soothe, energize, and inspire. This multisensory experience is no accident—it’s done with intention, grounded in the science of Neuroaesthetics, where the principles of human perception meet the art of living

What Is Neuroaesthetics?

Neuroaesthetics is the science of how our brains respond to beauty through art, nature, and yes, the spaces we live in. It looks at how things like light, texture, color, and layout impact our emotions, focus, and overall well-being.

One of its foundations is biophilia—our natural desire to connect with nature. That’s why so many current design styles you see today—like Organic Modern, Wabi-Sabi, and Japandi—are rooted in earthy textures, clean lines, and calm tones. We’re drawn to them instinctively.

For over 20 years, I’ve asked every client the same thing at the beginning of our work together: “Give me three words for how you want this space to feel”. Not look—feel. And from that point on, I filter every design decision through those words. Of course, function matters too—furniture layout, lighting, how a kitchen flows—these practical choices also create a sense of order, ease, and peace. Every element, from materials to spatial flow, has a direct impact on how we experience home, both consciously and subconsciously.

Designing for the Five Senses

Here’s how we bring each sense to life in the spaces we design—our approach to sensory interior design:

  • Sight: Natural light and beautiful views – indoor or outdoor.  Every detail, from sculptural lighting to subtle color gradations, is curated for visual serenity.
  • Touch: Texture invites connection. We incorporate surfaces that beg to be touched: honed marble, brushed linen, interesting woods, soft wool. These tactile moments ground us in the present, offering comfort and sensory richness.
  • Sound: Acoustic planning is essential for true luxury living. It could be the sounds of the water outside or a fountain inside, music, or even hearing the giggles of the children in the next room.  It’s personal, thoughtful, and very intentional.  We think about minimizing harsh echoes and mechanical noise, favoring soft-close cabinetry, layered textiles, and serene background tones that enhance calm and clarity.
  • Smell: Scent is often the most emotionally charged sense. We favor fresh, clean materials like natural woods and stone, and encourage subtle scent layering—whether through fresh florals or carefully chosen all-natural home fragrances—to create a cohesive sensory environment.
  • Taste (Metaphorically): Design, like a beautifully plated meal, should be savored. Spaces are crafted with balance, rhythm, and harmony in mind, offering moments of indulgence that nourish both the eye and the spirit.  This is also a nod to a kitchen where delicious food is enjoyed and the idea of taste in entertaining your friends and family.

Neuroaesthetics Matters for Artful Living because our environments directly influence how we think, feel, and function. In today’s fast-paced world, it is more important than ever to have a home that is more than a backdrop—it can also be a sanctuary for performance, restoration, and inspiration. Neuroaesthetic design supports emotional balance, reduces stress, enhances focus, and elevates everyday experiencess—designing for emotional wellness in the most personal way.
